Behind the demo
Hook Radar
Upworthy tested headlines on live readers, with readers split at random between versions. Spinda answered ten yes/no questions about every headline. Comparing headlines inside the same test shows which hooks won. Each hook and word was found on one set of tests and held up on another.
On 1,099 real A/B tests with a clear winner, the same hook rules picked the winning headline 68% of the time when Spinda spotted the hooks, and 57% with no model, using code that can only spot questions and numbers. These are news headlines from 2013–2015, and clicks are not sales.
